Residential and Activities Programs

Opportunities for Independence

Individuals with disabilities, and their families and caretakers, face many obstacles from day to day. Columbus offers a variety of programs and services that help individuals obtain some level of independence in their daily lives.

Residential Services

Residential services are a major issue for families transitioning loved ones from home environments to more independent living situations. Columbus’ Residential Services include three levels of support that can help make this transition easier and ultimately, more successful for both participants and their families:

  • Residential Homes provide round-the-clock care for people with medical conditions who require supervised care.
  • Supervised Apartments offer supervision, and education and training programs.
  • The Supported Living Program serves individuals who have developmental disabilities and need minimal support to life independently.

For more information, contact Kevin Keyes, Assistant Administrator, (801) 262-1552, ext. 112, kevin.keyes@slc.k12.ut.us.

Day Activities Programs

Like the general population, individuals with disabilities are living longer and thus have more needs later in life. Individuals in this program enjoy daily activities such as field trips and educational projects. The center’s Day Activities programs include:

  • The Day Activities Program, which offers daily activities and supervision for older people who are retired or unable to work.
  • The Medically Fragile Program provides daily activities and supervision for people with severe disabilities who require medical care.

Overcoming Obstacles to Work

Many people with disabilities face substantial obstacles when it comes to finding employment. Although most are employable to some degree, due to lack of opportunities and access, only about 35 percent are gainfully employed. To address this issue, Columbus offers training and employment services, which include the following programs:

  • Training Programs, which provide training in specific areas such as custodial services, food service, grounds maintenance and laundry services.
  • Supported Job-Based Training, which prepares people to work in the community by providing job placement, job coaching, temporary employment services and follow-up services.
  • Supported Employment creates partnerships between businesses and Columbus to train workers for specific jobs.
  • Production Services, which contracts with businesses for specific services and products such as assembly, packaging, production line work and manufacturing.
